Get comfortable with uncomfortable
Most people have a natural aversion to change. It's part of our survival system: predictability is comfortable and safe. We want to know when the sabertooth is likely to pass so we can avoid it. Venturing out into the dark unknown is likely to be hazardous to our health.
One of our fundamental needs is to avoid uncertainty.
Yet, while we don't like uncertainty most people want at least some in their life. Being 100% certain can mean a boring, exceptionally predictable life.
The test of life is how far we will push ourselves through uncertainty to reach a new level, to get the jump on life and experience the quantum leap.
Taking steps towards what we desire practically guarantees uncertainty. It will be uncomfortable. It will most certainly make you want to turn back to what you know, to what is comfortable.
It's not easy. But the truth is, it's not hard either. It's just different.
We need to let go of our expectations of comfort and safety because those are based on past experiences, not the future possibles.
Stepping out of our perceived comfort zone into the unfamiliar stretches us. It tests our resolve and our faith
Here's the expectation, feeling uneasy, uncomfortable, and like you don't have much control is the most predictable part of taking a quantum leap.
The insecurity, ambiguity, new and unfamiliar problems, failures, criticism and lack of support from others are all possible effects of going into uncomfortable territory.
But these are also signs that you set your sights on a true goal, and not something easy.
If you're comfortable in the pursuit of your goal then it's most likely not stretching you, especially if you know how you're going to get there.
Remember that you will very likely not know the means or how you will go from where you are now to your desired destination. Because of that it will feel like you're sailing without control as you're tossed about. But there are three things you have control over.
First, keep in mind where it is you are going.
Second, continue your pursuit of that destination.
Third, learn from your mistakes, those so-called failures, and use them to correct your course towards your destination.
Do you see a trend?
It's your vision of you at your destination that you become emotionally attached to, that feels real to you. It's your guiding star that you must keep constantly keep in mind. It is where the energy of our heart is focused on.
Courage is not the absence of fear, anxiety, or uncertainty. Courage is the confidence to press forward with certainty of your destination, in spite of fears. Courage is how we act in faith.
